OzComps: a project

Beta edition disclaimer (limitations):

A project the size of OzComps is a huge undertaking. It has taken more than three years to reach this stage. Some may question the wisdom of releasing a beta edition with so many limitations, but it has been decided that these limitations are but a minor inconvenience compared to the enormous wealth of material that is available and ready to go.

Nevertheless, it must be noted that this is a beta edition and not a complete release, and as such there are limitations and problems within. These include (but are not limited to) the following:

  • Many audio files have been sourced from lossy formats, some very heavily compressed. Unfortunately, no better version of these tracks was available at the time of releasing this beta edition. Higher quality files may become available for inclusion in a later edition. The website will always contain information about the source quality of each track. This issue is less of a problem with the MP3 and iPod versions. More than 80% of the source files for OzComps are lossless.
  • Vinyl-sourced tracks may not have been properly de-glitched before inclusion. These are given source codes 76, 77 and 78 and may contain pops, crackles, distorted sibilance and other artifacts associated with vinyl records. Some vinyl recordings may also contain small skips due to a software fault. These problems will be rectified before the full version is released.
  • The "version issue" has not been considered fully yet. Therefore, the version of a given track appearing in this edition of OzComps may not necessarily be the same as released on the Australian "A" side, nor may it be the same as gazetted for release on a given Disc. The version issue applies only to the original disc and bonus tracks of a Set - it does not apply to megamixes, b-sides or album tracks. Tracks which fail the "version test" will gradually be edited/replaced to conform. Later editions of OzComps should see this issue decreasing.
  • About 180 tracks were not able to be sourced at all, representing about 1.5% of the total tracks on OzComps. These missing tracks have been given temporary placeholder files which will be replaced as the real files are obtained. A list of the affected files appears on the website. In documentation, the titles of these missing tracks appears in grey print rather than black.
  • The accompanying documentation contains some gaps for composer, publisher, copyright and producer credits. At a minimum, all Tracks have Title, Version, Artist and Time information completed. Further research is ongoing to fill in as many of these gaps as possible, but it is anticipated that some information will not be found, especially phonographic copyright information for Stage III.
It has been discovered that some credits have found their way into the wrong places. These will be corrected as they are identified.
There are also a few spelling errors in the documentation.
  • Album summaries for Stages II and III have not been completed.
  • For Stages II and III, Bonus Discs are incomplete and B-Sides/Album Tracks have not been finalised.
  • All Stages contain "empty" slots, which are reserved for future use. These appear mainly towards the end of Stage I, on B-sides discs of Stage II and in most of Stage III.
  • Artwork for Stage III is in basic form (front cover) only. No "official" covers for the new Sets 323 "Explosive Hits '72", 332 "Supercharged Hits '73" and 335 "Cracker" have been produced.
  • In addition to all these, there may be (and probably are) other quality control issues not listed here.
Well now that you know what's wrong with OzComps beta 0.808, you can jump right in and start enjoying it.
