Day 7: 2005-08-02 (Tuesday)
Jin-Oh picked me up from the hotel right on 0900 and we went back to the church to continue the Remnants conference. After the conference, I was browsing some of the Korean language music books at the back of the church. I mentioned to Jin-Oh that I was looking for some Korean language translations of English worship songs for the Foreign Exchange (FX) double-CD project I was doing. He gave me a rather large book called “Praise Jesus 2000” and said I could keep it. It contains over 2000 songs in Korean, including many popular English ones. I thanked him and began going through it, marking the songs with which I was familiar. I have so far identified about 50; there are no doubt plenty more, but I still find it difficult to read the Hangul.
We left the church and returned to the restaurant for lunch. Then Jin-Oh invited me to come with him and Han Sang Jo (the pastor of the church that Jin-Oh attends) to 압구정제 (Apgujeong-je). It took about 30 minutes to get there, but about 15 minutes more to find the place they were looking for and then park the car. We were driving in circles for quite a while. Eventually though, we found a place to park, and walked into a “Sony Customer Station”. This place is a technology wonderland. Notebook computers, digital cameras and MP3 players were everywhere – not to forget the ubiquitous large plasma TVs all over the place as well (Jin-Oh had learned the word “ubiquitous” from me only the previous day, so it’s quite appropriate that I use it here). Apparently, Sang Jo had an issue with his notebook, which is why we were there. While he was being served, Jin-Oh and I looked at all the electronica on display.
Sang Jo and Jin-Oh took me back to the hotel and I had a rest. The Nagoya conference was continuing at 1930, but I had another appointment to meet Jack (김승수: Kim Seong Soo), so I told Jin-Oh I could not go this time. At about 1700, I headed out to walk to Sanseong subway station. The walk was quite long and all uphill. I was a bit tired when I got to the top, and then I had to go deep underground! The place I was meeting Jack was called Pyeongchon (441) on line 4. To get there, I had to change from line 8 at Jamsil (814) to line 2 (216), and then again at Sadang (226) to line 4 (433). The trip was long, and I arrived at 1915. Jack met me and we went to yet another Korean restaurant for yet another Korean meal. We chatted about many things over dinner. I introduced the FX project to Jack and explained what I wanted to do with him for the project. He was very enthusiastic about it and scheduled a session for me on 2005-08-17 at his home for recording. He said he would invite some friends over to help as well. This was very encouraging for me and I thanked Jack for his positive interest. At this time, however, Jack was very busy organising a summer camp for the youth group at his church, so he could not spend much time with me. After dinner, at about 2100, we made our way back to our respective places of lodgement. For me, this was a distant 2 hours away – and another 3 subway trains. When I surfaced at Sanseong, it was raining. I walked 2,016 steps down the hill to the hotel. The rain eased off about halfway, and by the time I got to the hotel it had almost stopped, but I was still pretty wet. The walk had taken about 15 minutes. 4½ hours of travelling for an 80-minute meeting with Jack had completely exhausted me, so I changed my clothes and collapsed on the bed.
